Why is this Hudson Valley Candle Store so unique?

Unlike other Hudson Valley candle stores, where you see a pretty candle or reed diffuser, smell it and buy it, here you make YOUR OWN scent. In addition to the act of making your own Hudson Valley Candle, Mundane is not the same ‘ole scents that you find in any candle store (think vanilla, lavender, etc). These go above and beyond what your sense of smell is used to (see below for full list) and, trust me, it will be delighted!

This charming shop has an 8-seat scent bar, which makes you are a part of the complete process from beginning to end: from choosing the fragrances to mixing them for your final product. These products not only smell divine, they are also vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic and handmade in this wonderful town, Cold Spring, NY.

In addition to offering the classic experience of choosing and purchasing the shop’s signature blends, the act of creating your own product, exclusive to you, is what makes this Hudson Valley Candle Shop extra special!

What is the Process of Making a Product at Mundane?

Step 1:

Upon arriving and being warmly greeted by Alexandra, she explains the process and asks whether you’re interested in creating a custom scent for:

  • A Candle
  • A Reed Diffuser
  • A Set of Ceramic Beads

Step 2:

From there, you receive a mini clipboard, pen and a sheet to fill out with your favorite scents. Pre-made scented candles are located on the wall behind the scent bar and each are labeled for your convenience.

And this is where the fun begins…

Step 3:

Sniff, smell and enjoy the process. Take your time…
Write down all the ones that you like, but at the end of the process, Alexandra helps you find the most complimentary fragrances and helps you narrow it down to three scents for your final product.

Step 4:

After choosing the three scents that you like and that compliment each other, a small tray located in your space at the scent bar will have the three bottles of the scents you chose. In addition, you will have a receptacle that resembles a shot glass where you will pour your fragrant oils into.

The combination of oils is completely up to you. That is what makes this process very unique. It’s not cookie cutter and it’s not 1/3, 1/3 and 1/3, although you can do it that way if you’d like. The smell of your candle, reed diffuser or ceramic beads is completely up to you.

Step 5:

After filling your small container, your melted wax-filled container will be brought to you (when making a candle) and you will be instructed to pour your oil fragrance into the melted wax and stir with a long-handled spoon.

And you can be confident that no one else has a product that smells exactly like yours!

What are the materials used for making a candle?

The candles are made with 100% soy wax and fragrance oils. They are safe to burn and is produced in the united States. Since dyes are not added to the wax, you get the purest form of product.

What scents are offered at this Hudson Valley Candle Store?

The fragrances available to choose from at Mundane is extensive and this lends to the uniqueness of this business. While other Hudson Valley Candle makers pre-select fragrances and scents for you, the difference at Mundane is that you choose the blend yourself.

It is important to note that not all fragrances are compatible with all products. During my visit, the following fragrances were available for candle making.
